How can we take a fresh look at colonial history? How is colonialism viewed in everyday life? And what needs to change if the people affected are to be given a voice? These questions are at the centre of the project led by Prof. Jürgen Zimmerer, which involves artists from Namibia and historians from Germany revisiting colonial history. They are examining the comprehensive collection of colonial photographs at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Hamburg, the partner for this research project. In particular, they consider how the motifs changed as colonisation progressed and how the brutal reality of colonial life is visualised in the photographs.
