The project "Documenting the Built Cultural Heritage of Deir ez-Zor in Post-Conflict Phase" " aims to document historical structures with a particular emphasis on Main Street, a major urban artery of the city Deir ez-Zor in Syria with historical and cultural significance. The targeted region is part of Deir ez-Zor's built cultural heritage that has been significantly depleted as a result of conflicts, crises, natural catastrophes, and unplanned urban expansion between 2011 and the present. The Main Street, a vital thoroughfare that connects many districts, has a rich historical record reaching back to the late Ottoman era and the French mandate period. Aligned with various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the project seeks to develop a strategy for the revitalization of Main Street, recognizing that cultural heritage comprises more than physical structures; it embodies the character of the city. It is critical to understand the issues faced by local communities, which have not only experienced cultural loss but also personal losses during crises. The project is funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation in its funding initiative Patrimonies.
