After hundreds of years of isolation, Japan began to open up to foreign countries around 1870. The feudal system was abolished, a modern constitution was introduced and investments were made in industry, education and technology. The symbol of this new era became the rickshaw. Originally intended for European travelers in the new capital Tokyo, the rickshaw soon mobilized the masses in cities and villages. Japan became a society on wheels.
