A person’s teeth are as unique as their fingerprints. What’s more, an examination of teeth can tell us a lot about a person’s life. The bioarchaeologists at the Forensic Institute of the University of Coimbra are using teeth and jaw bones to find out more about illnesses and their causes. Caries and periodontitis can point to a diet that was deficient and one-sided. The teeth of the human remains of Lagos also point to another striking characteristic, however. Many of them were rasped or filed. How can we explain that? What information is hiding behind this discovery?
