A number of Muslim minorities live in Bulgaria today, including above all ethnic Turks, Roma and Pomaks. The head of the various Muslim communities in Bulgaria, known as the Grand Mufti, lives southeast of Sofia, in the foothills of the northern Rhodope Mountains. His primary task is to unify the diverse currents of Muslim thought and faith. One major challenge of this is the integration of Muslim groups that bring with them more orthodox interpretations of Islam particularly from Saudi Arabia, such as Wahabi and Salafist influences. Islamic expert Prof. Simeon Evstatiev visits the Grand Mufti.
