The history of Sparta at the end of the classical period is told to us mainly by Herodotus. He brought the Spartan history into literature and himself became the source of later historians. But how credible is Herodotus in that respect? In his lecture at the "Tagung zu Ehren von Hans-Joachim Gehrke" at the University of Freiburg Dr Olivier Gengler (Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities) explores the use of Spartan king lists in Herodotus histories in an attempt to understand the overall representation of Spartan history constructed by ancient authors.
