Carl Alexander Simon pursued an ambitious vision. With his work "Emigration and German National Colonisation of South America with Special Reference to the Free State of Chile", published in 1850, he laid the ideological and political foundation for the German colonisation of Chile. In the book, he outlined his analysis of the political situation in Germany, which made emigration seem necessary, and discussed the geographical, social and economic conditions in Chile that made the country the ideal destination for German emigrants. Many German emigrants studied the book before setting off for South America, which made a second edition necessary. Important personalities of the time, such as Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter, also supported the idea of the German conquest of South America, which Simon himself saw as a "demand of the present".
