Where does the name Victual Brothers come from? The German name is Vitalienbrüder which, according to some sources, relates to the word Viktualien, i.e. victuals, hence the English translation. Probably, though, the name is derived from French, since during the 100 Years War the troops who supplied the army were known as vitailleurs. Even today though, we still don’t know how these seamen referred to themselves, so it is possible that the name was ascribed to them by others as late as the 19th century when nationalist movements were on the rise. Medieval historian Dr. Gregor Rohmann is exploring this and other considerations in his research.
