On 19 February 1850, just a few months after the failed German revolutions of 1848–1849, the artist and revolutionary Carl Alexander Simon (1805-1852) left the port of Hamburg for Chile. There he wanted to colonise the south of the country, "civilise" the indigenous people and found a "new Germany" – true to his motto "If you cannot take the tyrants from the peoples, take the peoples from the tyrants". The art historian Dr Miguel Gaete (University of York) has researched the artistic and colonial work of the universal artist with the support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
