Indonesian civil society is built on the back of mass Islamic organisations. The largest among them, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiya, have many millions of members, but there are several more regionally-based organisations that follow the same model: built on the backbone of educational institutions; committed to the idea of the Indonesian nation-state; functioning in the theological, educational and social spheres and highly influential in politics. In his lecture, Dr Kevin Fogg speaks about the origins of these organisations, their various ties to the state and the challenges they face in recent times.
Kevin Fogg's research project "Indonesian Mass Islamic Organizations beyond Java: Historical Development and Transnational Connections" was funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation as part of the special programme Islam.
