Very few historical figures are as visually and indivisibly connected to one specific physical feature as Adolf Hitler with his striking toothbrush moustache. The fact that his contemporaries were aware of this and considered the Hitler moustache as a symbol of identity is the proposition being put to the test by cultural historian Prof Friedrich Tietjen at the University of Vienna in a research project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation. His investigations are taking him, not least, to flea markets on the hunt for historical image material. Who wore the black patch on their upper lip as an unmistakable symbol and in what context?

Was kann man dagegen tun? Wahrscheinlich nichts.
