In the Victual Brothers’ times, violence at sea was an everyday occurrence, since nobody had a monopoly on force. At sea, therefore, it was not always possible to distinguish between good and evil, legal and illegal – everybody pursued their own interests. Problems of a legal or economic nature were resolved through theft, with violence often threatened. Historian Dr. Gregor Rohmann has nevertheless discovered that events didn’t always lead directly to open and physical violence: Even in the 14th century, combatants attempted to spare those not involved as well as their own resources.
