Laura Pecchioli wants to examine several places in Ostia precisely because cracks or what are known as torsion effects point to various forces exerted on the buildings. The fact that these characteristics can be found in several places could be an indication of seismic activity. In the Terme dei Sette Sapienti the building researcher discovers a particular feature: a supporting stone with devices for fastening metal clips. Presumably this was a preventive measure. There are numerous clues – but to what extent will Pecchioli’s research also be confirmed by seismological examinations? And was the demise of Ostia actually solely due to a possible earthquake? How did illnesses or even Rome’s diminishing importance affect the former port?
