Dr. Laura Pecchioli is an architect who specialises in ancient building techniques and earthquake research. In a project supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation she examines, among other things, how the Romans protected their buildings against possible earthquakes and what consequences earthquakes had for ancient cities. In the general interview we asked the scholar about her personal motivation and the impressive Roman constructions: What can modern architecture learn from Roman architects? She also answers initial questions on the research project: How safe were the buildings in Ostia? How frequent and above all how dangerous were the earthquakes in Ostia and the Roman Empire?
