Medieval pilgrims quite often had to master difficult passages on their travels, for example, crossing turbulent rivers. In the majority of cases they relied on the services of a ferryman to get from shore to shore, as bridge construction was an expensive matter also in those days. Often the money for this was provided in the form of donations to the church, as Dr Hartmut Kühne finds out on his trip to Torgau on the River Elbe and Grimmenthal on the River Werra.
