The Pomaks in Bulgaria and in neighbouring countries are among the oldest Muslim minorities in the Balkans. Their understanding of Islam dates back to the days of Ottoman rule, and they represent a traditional form of the faith to this day. Recent years have seen the development of a new religious current of Islam in Bulgaria, one that in particular appeals to the younger Muslim generation, namely Salafism, which propagates a confident return to the pure teachings of the Prophet. Islamic scholar Prof. Simeon Evstatiev visits two villages in the Rhodope Mountains, one a prime example of the traditionalists, the other of the Salafists.
