About two-thirds of the planet Earth is covered with water. However, explorers found out more about the back of the moon than the sea. What is hidden in the depths of the sea? With advancing technical possibilities, people have tried to get to the bottom of this question - and even to make the ocean useful for them. Thus, competition arose for the resources that were suspected to be found in the dark depths. A suspicion that was soon confirmed: manganese nodules have been detected in the Clarion Clipperton Zone, also known as the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone, in the Central Pacific, containing valuable raw materials. Historian Dr. Ole Sparenberg from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology investigates these attempts of deep-sea exploitation using various approaches: political, economic, historical, and ecological. However, the focus is on the question: Who owns the seafloor? Is the sea common heritage of humankind?
