In their interdisciplinary research project, literary scholar Dr. Kathrin Wittler and historian Dr. Johannes Czakai are focusing on a historical figure that has been difficult to get to know until now: Joel Jacoby. He came to Berlin from Königsberg in 1829 to make contact with aspiring writers, publishers and editors in the university environment. And he did so without being officially enrolled - at least that is what the two scientists were able to prove. In the 1830s, the liberal writer finally caused a public sensation: He was accused of spying on friends and colleagues for the Prussian police; in addition, he converted from Judaism to Christianity during this period. In their project, funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the researchers are now trying to gain new and private insights into Jacoby's life.
