The national broadcasting station ORTM in Mali reported on the official start of the research on historical manuscripts from Timbuktu by the Malian NGO SAVAMA-DCI. In 2013, approximately 377.000 manuscripts from 35 private libraries had been transferred to Bamako as they were in danger of destruction from islamic groups. After the evacuation operation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation has supported in a cooperation with the University of Hamburg and the German Federal Foreign Office measures for the restoration, inventorying and preservation of the manuscripts. The documents have in the meantime been stored in 43,000 acid-free boxes manufactured for them, a catalogue with essential data of each manuscript is available. This initiative has been documented in a series on L.I.S.A.video. The work of the Malian researchers on the manuscripts of Timbuktu has also been documented in an article of the magazine NEKAmag.
