The filigree work on the Trier silver box looks like "dewdrops in a spider's web". Art historian Dr Antje Bosselmann-Ruickbie is certain that only a few workshops in the Middle Ages would have been capable of such an artistic masterpiece. Or is the magnificent piece from the Trier Cathedral Treasury the work of a single goldsmith genius? Did all 18 decorative panels used come from a single source? Dr Antje Bosselmann-Ruickbie is trying to answer these questions at the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology in Mainz (LEIZA). The restoration and goldsmith specialists are using X-rays and microscopes to get to the bottom of the silver box.
