Marble, the shimmering decorative stone, is easy to recognise at first glance, even for laymen, thanks to its special surface structure. Geologically, however, distinguishing marble is not quite so simple. The concept of metamorphosis is central to this: real marble is a limestone that has completely recrystallised under high pressure and high temperatures. For Dr Marthe Kretschmar, this metamorphosis forms an important part of her research project in order to draw a holistic picture of the marble sculpture. After all, the material has its own history, which the art historian aims to explore in dialogue with geologists.
