After the Patriarchate of Constantinople, Antioch was home to one of the most influential episcopal sees in the Orthodox world. Building on this prestige, in 1652 Patriarch Makarios of Antioch undertook a seven-year journey from Constantinople via Wallachia and Moldavia to the Russian Tsarist Empire. The fragmentary sources lead Dr Mihai-Dumitru Grigore to the Romanian capital Bucharest. There, in the Romanian Synodal Library, lies the most important archive to shed light on the motives for Makarios' extraordinary journey and to show how mobility was used as a resource of power in the Orthodox world.
