In 1839, Joel Jacoby converted from Judaism to Christianity – not unusual after all since Jews were not allowed to enter the civil service at that time. But why did Jacoby choose Catholicism and not Protestantism – after all, the Prussian state was in conflict with the Catholic Church? Dr. Kathrin Wittler and Dr. Johannes Czakai want to investigate these questions in their project, visiting the Geheime Staatsarchiv in Berlin, among other places. This is where the life report can be found, which, together with newspaper articles and volumes of poetry, provides insights into Jacoby's motives.
