In their research project, scientists Dr. Johannes Czakai and Dr. Kathrin Wittler were able to find out that the writer Joel Jacoby worked as a spy for the government starting in the 1830s. Places of operation included cafés – sometimes to the displeasure of the other guests. The historian and the literary scholar can gain further important insights from the archive material of the Secret State Archives in Berlin – such as evidence that Jacoby was paid by the Ministry of the Interior and the police authority. But Jacoby not only shadowed – he was shadowed himself in 1844 – important evidence for this can also be found in the archive.
