After countless abandoned plans and failed attempts to build a tunnel under the English Channel, it was finally possible to celebrate on 6 May 1994, almost two hundred years after the initial plans: the Eurotunnel was officially opened. Its name reflects a key factor that made the construction of the tunnel possible: Britain's turning away from its global empire and towards Europe. As part of her research project supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, historian Dr Alison Carrol is investigating how the age-old fears that prevented the tunnel from being built for so long were finally overcome.
