Jade played an important role in Mayan culture. Spiritual significance was attached to the green gemstones and, due to their rarity and beauty, they symbolised power and status. Some of the dead of Uxul had jade set in their teeth. For Dr Nicolaus Seefeld, this was an unmistakable indication that they must have belonged to the nobility. But why did they have to die? To answer this question, the archaeologist also uses experimental methods. His hypothesis: the aristocratic family was to be wiped out.
