Ornaments made of small gold beads, finely crafted knot patterns and an ingenious locking mechanism with a golden lion: the silver box from the Trier Cathedral Treasury is a unique object. However, the 4.5-kilogram showpiece made of silver also symbolises the interconnected world of the Middle Ages, in which Oriental and Occidental cultures and artistic traditions were in active exchange with one another. Jewellery and treasure chests were a rare but common luxury object in many cultures. With the support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, art historian and archaeologist Dr Antje Bosselmann-Ruickbie (Justus Liebig University Giessen) is investigating who made the silver box and how it came to Trier. As many questions remain unanswered.
