Historical research does not take place in a vacuum: The fact that skin color is still a main feature of human distinction today is regularly brought home to us, not least by racially motivated rampages or the Black Lives Matter movement. But how did we get to the point where the world we live in is so fundamentally shaped by external characteristics? Because racism pretends that differences between people are natural, according to historian Craig Koslofsky. In his research project on the history of skin, funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, he shows that the skin is a place where history is only made by people - an inglorious success story.
