The pilgrimages took the pious across the area that is known as Germany today and as far as Santiago de Compostella in Western Spain. But what did these Medieval pilgrims look like, what clothing did they wear and what items did they carry with them? The ecclesial historian Dr Hartmut Kühne is in search of answers in the churches in northern and southern Thuringia. Signs made of lead and tin as well as old, heavy church bells provide him with valuable clues.
