The University of Texas at Austin would like to invite you to the first public event about the Civil-Slaves Section digitization project focused on the history of enslaved Afro-Venezuelans in the colonial and republican eras. The discussion panel will address some key issues such as: 1. The nature of slavery in the Venezuelan Caribbean during the Age of Atlantic Revolutions; 2. The contrast between slavery regimes in Latin America and Anglo America, and the opportunities enslaved peoples had to demand liberty under both systems; 3. What is the history behind this archive and how did it end up at the National Academy of History and not in the National Archives of the country; 4. What can this project implemented by local communities with the support of international partners tell us about the general situation of historical memory preservation in Venezuela?; 5. What role can this archive play in the current political and cultural battles of Afro-descendant communities across Latin America?
