Salt, which has long been both a food and a means of preservation, was a vital raw material in ancient societies. The Zanjan salt mine not only provides an insight into how the white mineral was handled, but is also the site of the six salt mummies, the so-called salt men, who died in mining accidents between 400 BCE and the 5th/6th century CE. The six salt men are the only mummies of their kind to have survived until today. Now, an Iranian-German cooperation project intends to examine more closely both the mummies and the numerous organic remains and archaeological finds of the mine.
