The remarkable rock-cut church Abuna Yemata in the highlands of Tigray dates back to the sixth century. Here, the conservation team of the Ethiopian Heritage Fund (EHF) together with its Ethiopian colleagues is getting down to work: the wall paintings of the church are being photographed and documented in order to establish a comprehensive record of the art works. For the examination, non-invasive techniques are used. The team aims to investigate the date of origin and the method of the creation of the extraordinary murals which tell the story of the expansion of Christianity in Ethiopia in the late fifth century.
