The early Christian double basilica of Agios Stefanos on the island of Kos, built in the 6th century AD, was once a beacon of faith. Its exposed position directly on the beach and the towering walls made it visible to sailors from afar. A great effort was made to impress those who came across the sea. Today, only remains of the once magnificent basilica can be seen, but for the team led by Prof. Dr. Salvatore Cosentino, the ruins are a key piece in their research, as they once formed an important node in the Christian network in the Aegean. The researchers are investigating who financed the construction, what materials were used and how the church was decorated: A burning glass of early Christian art and architecture in the Aegean that reveals a lot about life in the early Christian communities.
