In the so-called German albums, to which historian Prof. Dr. Robyn Radway is devoting her research project, there is not only an illustration of the inhabitants of Constantinople, but also a drawing of the German House itself. This depiction is of particular interest to the scholar, as it says a great deal about the lives of the Habsburg diplomats and the circumstances in which the costume books were created. It also raises the question of the symbolic significance of the house: how were the diplomats housed? What opportunities were offered to them, and to what extent were they able to participate in everyday life in Constantinople?
