Churches and places of worship sprang up all over the Greek islands from the 4th century onward, a network of island bishoprics: Beacons of the new faith that gradually spread throughout the Mediterranean.A team of historians and archaeologists led by Prof. Dr. Salvatore Cosentino (University of Bologna), supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, is investigating how the island bishoprics spread in the Aegean, how they were managed and organized economically, how they dealt with the "old" faith, and what traces they left behind on today's tourist-rich islands.
