Another interesting example of successful reenactment is the so-called Viking – a ship rebuilt true to the original in 1893, on which eleven crew members set out on their voyage from Bergen in Norway to Chicago after its completion. Authentic tools, methods and plans were used for such replicas even back then, as cultural historian Dr. Steffi de Jong was able to discover in her project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation – an approach that is still used today in experimental archaeology.
