One of the most famous artists' houses in Germany is the Malkasten in Düsseldorf, which was founded in 1848. From then on, they discussed and created art, but also organised feasts – often with a historical theme. This was also the case in 1877, when the largest of these festivals took place and the Malkasten became a stage for a national spectacle: Important stages of German history were portrayed by actors and artists in so-called living pictures.
