For a long time, museum curators in the ethnological museums in Cologne and Frankfurt thought that two ornate Kenyan wooden shields stored in their depots served as defensive weapons. In fact, however, the shields are ritual dance objects - so-called Ndoome. As part of the "Shifting Grounds" project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the research team is investigating the circumstances under which the cultural objects reached the museums.
