The first King of Sicily, who was then also Holy Roman Emperor and ultimately also gained the title “King of Jerusalem” was the Hohenstaufen Friedrich II, who was worshipped by his followers and called “stupor mundi”: wonder of the world, greatest among the rulers of Earth. His admirers wanted to demonstrate his importance for his contemporaries and selected the cathedral in Palermo as his final resting place, where he was placed alongside his parents. He was buried in one of these special sarcophagi made of the rare red porphyry, which bears artistic reliefs among other decorative elements. Dr Elise Morero and Dr Ruggero Longo want to know what tools the medieval stonemasons used to produce them. Did they apply special drilling and sawing techniques to be able to work this hard stone so delicately? Silicon impressions should help to answer this question.
