Bärbel Küster (Berlin) opened the second day of the symposium “All the Beauty of the World. The Western Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)” with her Reflections on the First Day. During her talk, she points out the importance of researching the informal markets and their actors (such as soldiers, tourists, and sailors). She emphasizes the significance of the local history of things, the material history of the market, the mechanisms of valuation and the political purposes of non-European artefacts on the Western market.
