Initially, when the Ethiopian Heritage Fund (EHF) was set up, it was particularly interested in the conservation of manuscripts, icons, and other rather portable objects. However, the focus of the EHF changed after visiting the extraordinary rock churches of Tigray: The team was increasingly concerned with the wall paintings, some of which were in the process of disintegration. In doing so, they restorers pursue a sustainable approach and, in addition to conservation, attach great importance to the documentation of the artworks. But before the team can start its work, it has to overcome bureaucratic hurdles. Only after all papers and documents have been produced, the climbing tour to the rock churches can begin.
