Traditional mud-brick buildings, which can still be found in most modern places in Oman, are the focus of an interdisciplinary research project in which scholars from the fields of archaeology, Islamic studies and sociology are working together. Among other things, the participants are investigating the question of why the mud-brick buildings are neither used as living space nor demolished today, and are trying to find out what identity-forming function is attributed to the "lost cities".
