Archaeologist Alexander Herrera’s journey takes him to the Eastern Andes in Peru along the backbone of the mountains and follows steep old trade routes, some of which reach an elevation of up to 5,000 metres. It was above all the Incas who used and controlled these passes. They divided up the water at the high-elevation sources and determined how much water went to other peoples in the Andes. As such, control of water and power went hand in hand. But what role did joint worship of the ancestors play?
