How does geography impact on the history and culture of a people? This is a question also asked by archaeologist Prof. Alexander W. Herrera, who has been studying the traditional way of life of people in the Andes for almost 20 years. The focus of his studies is on water. With the introduction of irrigation farming over 4,000 years ago, it became possible to cultivate numerous different foodstuffs such as peanuts, corn or potatoes, as well as traditional native crops. The importance of water is not only reflected in farming, but also in mythology: As they are the most important sources of water, the Andes inhabitants worship the surrounding glaciers like gods.
