Prof. Dr. Shamil Jeppie would probably paraphrase the aim of his current research work as creating an independent identity for Africa that is free of ascriptions charged with colonial history. The Director of the Institute of Humanities in Africa at the University of Cape Town in South Africa has been working on this project for a different African history for more than ten years now. The basis of his research is formed by the manuscripts from Timbuktu, one of Africa’s most important written legacies. In order to ensure this unique source can be used by researchers in the long term and wherever they may be to help promote the independence and diversity of African cultures, hundreds of thousands of documents need to be digitized
