Summer School History Takes Place - Dynamics of Urban Change, Istanbul, 8-21 September 2013

Application Deadline 25 June 2013

Since 2003 the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius has invited up to twenty young historians and social scientists (usually postgraduate students) annually to take part in studies programmes in various locations. The aim is to find the traces of history in the topography, architecture and monuments of the place. The city itself is ‘read’ as a historical source - "History Takes Place".

From 8 to 21 September 2013 in cooperation with the Gerda Henkel Foundation the summer school "History Takes Place – Dynamics of Urban Change" will be held in Istanbul. Taking Istanbul as an example, the aim of this year’s summer school is to create an international network of the historical, cultural and social sciences as well as architecture and city planning, in order to examine current developments in urban environments.

Istanbul 2013

Istanbul is a city of seemingly infinite diversity spanning time and space in its past and present incarnations. As one of the world’s most ancient cities, Istanbul has had many names and has undergone many radical transformations in the course of its Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman past. Today’s megacity on the Bosphorus is an international centre of finance, business, and culture, and attracts many tourists and migrants. The metropolis is poised to become a hub for a new phase of urban globalization – bringing its history into the future.

The summer school invites applications particularly from postgraduate students in history, art history, cultural studies and the social sciences, as well as young architects and city planners. Applicants should have a genuine interest in an interdisciplinary exchange on the history of the city and city development. Participants should have a specialization connected with Istanbul as well as a keen thematic and methodological interest in urban studies. Sessions will be held in English. Applicants are expected to prepare for the sessions with course materials and reading lists in order to be able to give a presentation on a set topic related to their academic interests and competencies.
Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the organizers.

Please send your application together with a statement of interest, CV and suggested presentation topic (max. 2 pages) to the following address:
