In his research project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the science historian Prof. Dr. Günther Oestmann is looking at naval schools, which – unlike what one might expect – are not only to be found exclusively in coastal regions. Instead, Germany's oldest preserved naval school, which today serves as a museum, is located in the Oldenburg Münsterland region near Vechta. In his research, Günther Oestmann was already able to find out that the school was founded by the steersman Johann Henrich Rabe, who trained seamen in the winter months to increase his income. But why was a maritime school on dry land worthwhile in the first place?
