The Research Project
Dr Vittoria Feola investigates the role of Rome and Venice as book trade and intellectual hubs in the Habsburg network of Peter Lambeck, librarian of the Imperial Library, Vienna, 1640-1680. The aim of my project is twofold. First, she intends to research the impact of Italian culture on Lambeck during his two sojourns in Italy between the 1640s and the early 1660s. Secondly, she considers the Italian context of the uses to which Lambeck put his Italian contacts in order to acquire material for the Imperial Library in Vienna, of which he was Prefect from 1662 until 1680. This is a multidisciplinary project of intellectual history, that combines book history with network studies in order to produce a significant contribution to our understanding of early modern Habsburg intellectual networks. In so doing it fills the current historiographical gap, while opening up new avenues of research about the roles of Vienna, Rome, and Venice as centres for the production, transmission, and preservation of knowledge in the late seventeenth century.
