Metz-Becker did not derive her findings about the history and development of birth culture exclusively from written sources. Paintings in churches also supplied important information – for instance the portrayal of birth on a side wing of the St. John altar in the Elisabeth-Kirche in Marburg. Another way the cultural ethnologist deepened her understanding of how the profession has developed was through conversations with midwives.
