The reform era of the Meiji period brought about many inventions and new laws in Japan, and new professions emerged. The changes of the new era were particularly visible in the traffic sector, on the roads and in transportation: steam engines, special hand-powered boats, the first bicycles. But the rickshaw became the most important metaphor of change. In her research project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, Kate McDonald asks: How did the rickshaw become Japan's most popular means of transportation?
